Forget the festive fads – employee wellbeing during the winter months is about simple yet effective seasonal adjustments to ensure a comfortable and safe work environment

It’s a workplace debate that can divide even the most tight-knit teams. Pumpkin Spice – the best thing since hot beverages were invented or over-hyped fad? OK, so it might not be the most critical issue, however, it’s important for managers to know how to keep their employees happy, healthy and energised as the days shorten and the nights lengthen.

After all, nearly two-thirds of workers report feeling less productive and motivated during the colder months as energy levels drop and routines shift. Here’s how to make simple seasonal adjustments to help your team overcome the winter slump –

Elevating Lighting

Extra lighting can help mitigate the demotivating effects of arriving at work while it’s still dark outside. Soft, natural light is crucial for boosting moods and making sure all areas of the workspace are effectively used. Full-spectrum daylight bulbs are also a great option, as they mimic the full range of natural light and create a comfortable work environment without being too harsh. Another effective way to improve lighting during darker hours is to choose lighter shades for lamps and blinds, as neutral tones can help maximise natural light.

Staying Refreshed

While we all love a latte in the morning (or whatever our drink of choice is), maintaining adequate hydration during winter is crucial. The dry indoor air caused by heating systems can lead to dehydration, often without employees even realising it. This dehydration can result in reduced energy levels, lower moods, and increased fatigue. Make sure there are plenty of water and drink choices available to keep your team hydrated!

Securing the Fort

Winter weather – heavy rain, strong winds, and snow – can cause significant damage to doors, windows and roofs. Additionally, if not properly secured, they can allow cold air to seep in and warm air to escape, resulting in drafts and uneven heating. This not only impacts the indoor comfort but also leads to ramped up energy bills!

Inspect all locks and seals to ensure they are in good condition. If any locks, seals, or other securing elements need replacement, it’s wise to order and install them before the harshest winter weather sets in. By ensuring that all entry points are properly secured and insulated, you can maintain a comfortable, energy-efficient workspace

Inside and Out

Now is the time to review any external spaces that may need repair or maintenance over the colder months. For instance, car parks are often used during low visibility conditions or in the dark, both in the early mornings and evenings. Ensuring that all lighting is working properly, and that signage is clear and unobstructed is essential for maintaining safety around the premises.

Ensuring employee comfort during the winter is all about wellbeing, comfort and security. By taking these steps to ensure you are prepared for even the coldest weather, managers play a crucial role in fostering a more productive and comfortable work environment throughout the winter months.
