As reported by the BBC, a prescription-based walking and cycling trial is set to run from 2022 to 2025
Staffordshire is one the 11 countries taking part in the scheme alongside Bath, North East Somerset, Cornwall, Cumbria, Doncaster, Bradford, Gateshead, Nottingham, Leeds, Suffolk and Plymouth.
A funding of £830,000 has been allocated to pay for free bike loans, cycle training and walking groups. The trial will run from 2022 to 2025 with the decline in GP appointments and prescriptions to be closely monitored in order to gauge the efficacy of the scheme.
“This trial aims to build on existing evidence to show how bringing transport, active travel and health together can make a positive impact on communities across England,” says former Olympic cyclist and national active travel commissioner, Chris Boardman.
The initiative is set to help alleviate the workload of the NHS by promoting a healthier mental and physical lifestyle.
