Your shadow self represents the unconscious aspects of your personality that you may suppress, deny, or conceal. These elements can include emotions, fears, desires, or traits that clash with your self-image or societal norms.

Psychologist Carl Jung described the shadow self as the “dark side” of the psyche – not inherently negative, but often overlooked or misunderstood. Embracing this hidden part of yourself can lead to greater self-awareness and personal growth.

What is Shadow Work?

Shadow work involves delving into and integrating your shadow self – those hidden emotions, fears and desires – to promote healing and development. For instance, imagine being teased as a child for enjoying the spotlight during school plays. Over time, you might internalise this as a flaw, avoiding opportunities where you could be perceived as “attention-seeking.”

Ignoring your shadow doesn’t make it disappear; instead, it often manifests in other ways. This can result in challenges such as self-sabotage, low self-esteem, or struggles with anxiety and depression. Addressing your shadow allows you to break free from these patterns and move toward a more authentic self.

Getting Started

To begin shadow work, the first step is identifying your inner shadow. One effective way to do this is by examining your habits. While habits can be positive, some may hold you back. Reflect on the patterns you repeatedly find yourself following in life. Are there any that seem to hinder your growth or prevent you from moving forward? Recognising these recurring behaviours is a key step in uncovering your shadow.

Feeling unaccepted, especially by yourself, can be challenging. Start by practicing loving affirmations to nurture self-compassion. Pay attention to the triggers that evoke strong emotional reactions within you.

Take time to meditate on these triggers, allowing yourself to step back and observe them with curiosity rather than judgment. When emotions arise, give yourself permission to feel them fully, creating space for healing and understanding.

By embracing shadow work, you embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing. As you confront the hidden aspects of your personality, you unlock the potential to live a more authentic, fulfilling life. Remember, the path to self-awareness is ongoing, and each step brings you closer to a deeper understanding of yourself.
