The Royal College of Nursing is predicted to announce a 48 hour strike within days. A two week notice period is required before action is taken.
Union law still requires staff to ensure that support is provided for clinical emergencies in order to uphold the safety of patients.
“Our priority is keeping patients safe,” says the Department of Health.
The RCN staff have stated that they might not engage in local agreements with NHS managers as was previously negotiated, in an effort to pressurise the NHS heads to appeal to the government.
Downing Street further announced on Saturday evening that it was not open to further negotiations.
