NEWS: Over 1,000 GP Practices Set for Refurbishment Boost

As reported by Open Access Government, the UK Government has unveiled a major investment package aimed at transforming general practice, with over £102 million allocated to expand and refurbish more than 1,000 GP surgeries across the country

This funding forms a key part of the government’s Plan for Change, which aims to deliver 8.3 million additional GP appointments and significantly enhance patient access to primary care.

The investment – the largest in GP infrastructure in the past five years – will be used to create new consultation and treatment rooms, making better use of existing practice space. It’s a move designed to boost productivity, reduce pressure on hospitals, and bring care closer to communities.

At present, many GP practices have the capacity to see more patients, but are limited by outdated or inadequate facilities. The funding will enable surgeries to expand and modernise, allowing them to accommodate growing demand more effectively.

Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting welcomed the development, saying:

“It will be a long road, but this government is putting in the work to fix our NHS and make it fit for the future. These are simple fixes for our GP surgeries, but for too long, they were left to ruin, allowing waiting lists to build and stopping doctors from treating more patients.”
