According to the Guardian, people in England are struggling to pay for their prescriptions which may lead to larger population health issues
Half of a survey involving 269 pharmacies indicated that there had been a rise in customers asking which of their prescriptions they could ‘do without’ due the cost of living crisis.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland currently offer free NHS prescriptions while most adults in England pay a standard prescription fee of £9.35 per item.
“We are deeply concerned that people are having to make choices about their health based on their ability to pay,” says Thorrun Govind, a chair of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS).
The RPS aims to renew their call for free prescriptions for patients with long-term conditions.
The Department of Health and Social Care stated that it had worked on the issue and that approximately 89% of prescriptions in England were no exempt of fees.
