As reported by Love Andover, the NHS Healthier You Diabetes Prevention Programme has now supported more than 900,000 people since its launch in 2016, with 166,000 new participants joining in the past year alone

This internationally recognised initiative is aimed at individuals at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and offers tailored support to help reduce that risk. Participants receive personalised guidance on healthy eating, physical activity, and weight management over the course of a nine-month programme.

To ensure accessibility, the programme is offered in both face-to-face and digital formats, the latter including mobile apps, activity trackers, and access to virtual health coaches. On average, those who complete the programme lose over 3kg and lower their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by more than 37%.

The programme is available to adults identified as being at high risk by their GP or via an online risk assessment tool.

Dr Clare Hambling, NHS England’s clinical director for Diabetes and Obesity, said: “This initiative empowers people to take control of their health. If you’re at risk, getting support early can make a huge difference – and the NHS is here to help.”

With Type 2 diabetes continuing to pose a major public health challenge, the Healthier You programme stands as a key preventative measure in the NHS’s long-term plan to improve population health.
