As reported on Wired.gov, NHS Smart technology is helping thousands of children with obesity to manage their weight
Thousands of children living with severe obesity are being supported to achieve healthier lifestyles through a pioneering NHS initiative that combines specialist care with innovative smart scale technology.
As part of a first-of-its-kind pilot, 15 NHS Complications from Excess Weight (CEW) clinics are now trialling digital smart scales that allow clinical teams to deliver continuous, expert weight management support remotely. The technology enables NHS staff to track patient progress and provide personalised guidance without the need for frequent in-person visits.
Currently, around 350 patients and their families are using the system, which includes smart scales designed with ‘hidden digits’ – displaying only directional feedback through a mobile app, rather than exact weight figures. This approach reduces anxiety and focuses attention on behavioural progress. The app automatically syncs data with clinical teams, allowing them to send real-time encouragement and tailored advice to help families meet their health goals.
This digital innovation builds on the success of the NHS’s specialist obesity services. Since 2021, 4,784 children and young people aged 2 to 18 have received support for complications related to severe obesity from the network of 32 CEW clinics across England.
The new smart scale initiative will expand to four additional clinics this summer, helping a further 150 children access care.
