Organisations are increasingly recognising the potential of generative AI in learning and development. Your employees may already be using it; however, they might not be fully optimising its capabilities due to limited resources and knowledge. This article offers insights on how to more effectively leverage generative AI to enhance its impact.
A global study of 14,000 workers conducted by Salesforce in late 2023 found that 28% were using generative AI at work, with over half doing so without formal approval. Similarly, a 2023 McKinsey report echoed these findings, and the numbers are likely even higher now. A recent study by Harvard Business School and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) highlights AI’s transformative impact, revealing that consultants using generative AI completed tasks 22% faster and with 40% better quality compared to those who did not.
Unlocking AI Insights
Start by conducting an internal survey to gain insight into how your employees are using generative AI. Collect data on the tools they use, the frequency of their usage and how they apply these tools in their work. Ensure that the survey is framed as an opportunity to understand their experiences, not to penalise anyone.
After analysing the survey results, identify those who are using generative AI effectively and creatively. These individuals, often informal leaders, can offer valuable perspectives on the practical applications of generative AI, including both the benefits and challenges they encounter.
Developing a Learning Culture
Integrating generative AI knowledge into your organisation’s learning and development strategy can help all employees leverage the expertise of early adopters while aligning AI use with your organisational objectives. Foster a culture that prioritises continuous learning and skill development to keep pace with the fast-evolving AI landscape.
Regularly update training materials to incorporate the latest advancements, and offer opportunities for employees to participate in conferences, webinars, and other educational events. Encourage a culture of peer learning by promoting the sharing of experiences and tips among colleagues.
Developing Best Practices
It can be valuable to tap into the expertise of your generative AI pioneers to develop best practices tailored to your organisation. Create a collaborative environment where these early adopters can share their experiences and insights. Involve these pioneers in the development of formal training programs to ensure the content is relevant and practical.
Next, pilot these best practices with a small, controlled group before implementing them more widely. This phase allows you to gather feedback, refine the guidelines and resolve any issues. Additionally, develop comprehensive guides, FAQs and video tutorials to ensure employees have easy access to the information they need.
Tracking learning progress and outcomes is crucial, as is utilising data to tailor learning experiences and foster a growth mindset among employees. By integrating generative AI into learning and development, you can leverage internal expertise to drive both innovation and efficiency.
