Sports fever: Cities to watch
Top of the list for UK guests this summer is the ‘Iconic Cities’ category, driven by the allure of events like the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024. Paris, unsurprisingly, has become the most searched destination for UK travellers, thanks to its easy transport links and vibrant atmosphere.
The excitement isn’t confined to the capital, though. Other French cities such as Lille, Versailles, and Lyon are also drawing attention, hosting basketball, handball, equestrian events, and football respectively. Airbnb reports that listings in these areas have seen a staggering elevenfold increase in page views during the Games period compared to the previous year.
Football fans are also gearing up for the European Football Championship in Germany, with UK supporters hopeful for an English triumph. Cologne, Frankfurt, and Munich have emerged as top destinations for British fans, eager to be part of the action.
Playful stays: The rise of the ‘play’ category
In a summer dominated by sports, it’s no surprise that searches for Airbnb’s ‘Play’ Category have soared by 122% among UK travellers. This category features amenities perfect for an active and playful stay, such as basketball courts, game rooms, miniature golf, and water slides. Families, in particular, are looking for stays that keep everyone entertained.
The great outdoors: Family-friendly beachside holidays
With so much going on, outdoor space is a top priority for UK families. Searches for properties with outdoor amenities like pools and BBQs have increased by 31%. Airbnb’s spacious accommodations, complete with kitchens and private outdoor areas, are a hit with families. Over half of UK guests (55%) say the ability to house the whole family in one place is a key factor when booking, and 72% highlight the importance of amenities like kitchens and backyards.
As the summer heats up, Brits are ready to embrace a season of sports, adventure, and fun-filled holidays. Whether heading to the bustling cities of Europe or seeking tranquillity by the sea, there’s a plethora of options to suit every traveller’s needs.
