Revamp your commute

Take advantage of the pleasant summer weather by changing up your daily commute. If you’re within walking or biking distance from your workplace, now is the perfect time to leave the car at home. Enjoying a brisk walk or bike ride to work allows you to get some exercise, breathe in the fresh air, and save on petrol.

If walking or biking the entire way isn’t feasible, consider driving partway and walking or cycling the rest. Alternatively, find a nearby walking path to enjoy before or after your workday. A bit of fresh air and exercise can do wonders for your mood and energy levels.

Adapt your work schedule

Summer is an excellent time to tweak your work hours. Consider these options to create a more summer-friendly schedule:

  • Start earlier, finish earlier: If you can, begin your workday earlier so you can wrap up sooner and make the most of the long, sunny evenings. This gives you ample time to spend with friends or engage in activities you love.
  • Longer lunch breaks: Take inspiration from the Spanish siesta and enjoy a longer lunch break. A bit of midday relaxation and fun can make your day feel more balanced and enjoyable.
  • Frontload your week: Aim to complete more work at the beginning of the week, allowing you to leave early on Fridays and kickstart your weekend.

Make lunch breaks count

We’ve talked about the importance of taking your lunch break for your well-being, but summer offers unique opportunities to mix things up:

  • Eat outdoors: Find a pleasant spot to enjoy your lunch in the sunshine. Whether it’s a park bench or a nearby café with outdoor seating, the change of scenery can be refreshing.
  • Social lunches: Meet up with colleagues or friends for lunch. Social interaction can boost your mood and make your day more enjoyable.
  • Walk it out: Use part of your lunch hour for a stroll. A bit of movement can invigorate you and help clear your mind for the afternoon ahead.
  • Extended breaks: Adjust your work schedule to accommodate longer lunch breaks, giving you more time to relax and recharge.

Embrace micro-adventures

Micro-adventures, as coined by The New York Times, are “short, perspective-shifting bursts of travel closer to home.” These mini escapades are perfect for those with busy schedules:

  • Midweek escapades: Plan an outing after work to a nearby spot. Whether it’s an evening at the beach or a local event, these little breaks can make your week feel more adventurous.
  • Day trips: Explore nearby natural or urban areas that you’ve always wanted to visit. A day trip can provide a refreshing change of pace without requiring extensive planning.
  • Weekend warriors: Dedicate your weekends to exploring new towns or natural areas within a reasonable distance. These short getaways can feel like mini holidays and give you something to look forward to each week.

So, what will you do to make the most of your summer? Whether it’s tweaking your commute, adjusting your work hours, making the most of your lunch breaks, or planning micro-adventures, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the season despite a busy schedule. Get creative and make this summer one to remember!
