As reported by the BBC, the rising energy costs will cause an influx in the population’s declining health
According to the NHS Confederation, the UK is currently in the midst of a ‘humanitarian crisis’.
“Many people could face the awful choice between skipping meals to heat their homes and having to live in cold, damp and very unpleasant conditions,” says CEO Matthew Taylor, former Labour Party adviser.
An action plan signalling a £400 payment to every household in autumn to battle the rising energy costs has been devised by the government.
However, the NHS warns that the increasing energy prices and that of the cost-of-living, coupled with COVID and flu outbreaks will still pose extreme difficulties for the population as well as their ability to cope with the rising number of patients.
Responsible for over 10,000 deaths annually, cold homes could be responsible for an increased risk of heart attacks, respiratory conditions and mental health deterioration.
The government has endeavoured to support the NHS by increasing the number of hospital beds available. There has also been an initiative from the Department of Health and Social Care to employ staff from overseas in order to deal with winter staff shortage.
