PMA Awards 2022: winners revealed

The annual PMA Awards ceremony has taken place at the 2022 Best Practice Show hosted at the NEC in Birmingham last week

Thousands of healthcare professionals attended the show across two days, which including presentations on many issues in primary care, including Succession Planning, ARRS roles: integrating and managing multi-disciplinary teams, managing GP Practice Finance and customer and conflict management.

It was standing room only at a packed PMA Theatre as the prestigious award ceremony began, celebrating excellence in management across all areas of the health and social care sector.

Following hundreds of nominations and some tough decisions for the judging panel, the PMA award winners received their accolades – including Sharon Bates of Barnstaple Alliance PCN in North Devon taking PMA Primary Care Network Manager of the Year and Judith Taylor and Kevin Doran of Sunderland GP Alliance Medical Practices jointly winning the title of PMA Practice Manager of the Year.

It was Martin Randall of Leatside Surgery in Devon who collected PMA Practice Business Manager of the Year and Hannah Cullen of Newton Drive Health Centre in Blackpool and Andrena Newton of Peterloo Medical Centre in Middleton who were joint winners of the PMA Reception Manager of the Year.

Two of the top awards were presented by last year’s winner of the Outstanding Contribution to General Practice award, primary care manager Tracy Dell. This award recognises those who have gone above and beyond expectations of their role resulting in significant patient benefit in the practice and wider community.

The PMA Outstanding Contribution to General Practice was this year awarded to Amy Sissons of the Thornton Practice in Fylde, with Sanjay Shyamapant and Natasha Gane both highly commended.

And finally, Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Sheinaz Stansfield of Oxford Terrace and Rawling Road Medical Group in Gateshead and Valerie Denton of East Trees Health Centre in Bristol.

“I was not expecting this!” said Sheinaz, following the ceremony. “Thank you so much and thank you for enabling the voice of Practice Managers to be heard loud and proud.

“There’s so much to celebrate in General Practice whist acknowledging the challenges – and supporting each other through them.”

Ian Jones, PMA’s operations director added: “The quality of the nominations this year has been phenomenal. Across all categories – the winners and highly commended recipients have demonstrated a dynamic input to their practice, their PCN or other healthcare settings with measurable impact and value.

“We’re not very good at celebrating our successes in Primary Care – and that needs to change! We are professional, we do excel and we do have the patient at the centre of all we do.”
