As reported by BBC News, the government has announced it has procured over 100,000 doses of the monkeypox vaccine in an attempt to combat the spread of the virus
The government and the NHS have responded to the rising number of monkeypox infections, by stepping up the vaccination programme.
Most of the vaccines will be available in London, where 75% of the confirmed cases have been reported, the majority of which are gay or bisexual men.
Figures show there have been 2,436 confirmed cases in England and that 1,778 of those have been in the capital.
The minister of vaccinations, Maggie Throup, has said: “We have procured over 100,000 doses and that is the most of any other EU country. So we are definitely ahead of the game on that”.
Ms Throup has also requested that people wait to be invited to receive the jab.
The European Commission’s Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) recently announced that approximately 109,090 doses had been bought.
In total, the WHO has stated that over 16,000 cases of monkeypox have been recorded across 75 countries, with five reported deaths from the virus.
