NEWS: Government Backs New Dementia Research Networks

As reported by Care Home Professional, a new wave of government-funded research aims to develop innovative technologies that help people with dementia live independently at home for longer

People living with dementia are set to benefit from a new wave of government-backed research aimed at supporting independent living at home.

Four newly established research networks, bringing together leading UK researchers, developers and health and social care professionals, will focus on designing innovative technologies to help individuals with dementia manage memory loss, communication challenges, and daily tasks. The initiative aims to slow the progression of the disease and extend the time patients can live safely, comfortably and independently in their own homes.

The research teams will work closely with people affected by dementia and their carers to ensure that innovation is shaped by lived experience and evolving needs. This person-centred approach supports the government’s broader ‘Plan for Change’, which seeks to shift more healthcare delivery from hospitals into the community – improving patient outcomes while easing pressure on NHS services.

In addition, the networks will collaborate with key organisations including the NHS, Age UK, Alzheimer’s Society, Alzheimer’s Research UK and local authorities. This multi-partner approach is designed to ensure a comprehensive, inclusive process, drawing on expertise across sectors to deliver the best possible results for those living with dementia.
