NEWS: UK Reveals Watch List of Deadly Diseases

As reported by BBC News, health officials have identified 24 infectious diseases, including avian flu and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, that could pose future public health risks

The UK has unveiled a new watch list of 24 infectious diseases that could pose significant risks to public health in the future. The list, compiled by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), highlights viruses and bacterial infections that may lead to pandemics, cause severe harm, or currently lack effective treatments.

Several viruses with global pandemic potential are included on the list, reflecting concerns about diseases that could follow in the footsteps of Covid-19. Among those identified is avian flu, also known as bird flu, which has been closely monitored in recent years due to its potential to spread widely. The list also features mosquito-borne illnesses that could become increasingly prevalent as climate change drives warmer temperatures, creating ideal conditions for their spread.

The comprehensive watch list includes a range of well-known threats such as Lassa fever, Norovirus, and Ebola, alongside lesser-known but equally concerning pathogens like the Nipah virus, Oropouche virus, and Rift Valley fever. The presence of these viruses highlights the UK’s focus on preparing for potential outbreaks of both emerging and re-emerging diseases.

The list also warns of bacterial threats, including those that are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotic treatments. Infections like Anthrax, Q fever, and Tularemia have also been included, highlighting concerns about both naturally occurring threats and those that could arise from biosecurity risks.
