As reported by the National Health Executive, officials are introducing new higher technical qualifications designed to fill critical skills gaps across the fast-expanding medical technology sector in a push to strengthen the NHS’s future workforce

New higher technical qualifications (HTQs), open to delivery by colleges, universities and independent training providers, are designed to prepare students for specialist roles emerging across the MedTech sector. These range from technicians working with AI-driven diagnostic tools and wearable health devices to staff supporting imaging, testing and regulatory compliance.

Skills England, the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and Pearson have worked with employers, academics and NHS representatives to shape the content, ensuring it reflects current workforce needs. The new programmes will bridge the gap between school-leaver qualifications and degree study, with an emphasis on digital systems, regulatory knowledge and product evaluation.

The initiative is the result of a collaboration between Skills England, Pearson, WMCA and industry partners responding to rising demand for skilled staff. The Association of British HealthTech Industries forecasts that the sector will require about 70,000 additional workers by 2035, on top of another 75,000 needed to replace those leaving the profession.
