NEWS: UK Launches Major Prostate Cancer Screening Trial

Blood sample for PSA test, diagnosis for prostate cancer

As reported by the BBC News, a major UK trial designed to identify the most effective method of screening for prostate cancer has officially begun

The study will invite men aged 50 to 74 to take part, with the lower age limit reduced to 45 for black men, who face double the risk of developing and dying from the disease compared with white men.

Researchers will examine whether combining rapid MRI scans with the standard prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test can improve the accuracy of early detection. Participants will also provide saliva samples, allowing scientists to test if DNA-based “spit tests” offer a more reliable indicator of cancer risk than PSA alone.

Backed by £42 million from Prostate Cancer UK and the National Institute for Health and Care Research, the Transform trial is the largest screening study of its kind in decades. GP practices have already begun sending out invitations to potential participants.

Early findings are expected within two years. If successful, the trial will then be scaled up dramatically, eventually involving as many as 300,000 men across the country.
