As reported by UK Authority,  NHS Providers has launched a new productivity toolkit aimed at helping healthcare organisations prioritise key elements of their digital transformation strategies

Developed as part of NHS Providers’ Digital Boards programme, the toolkit offers a set of core principles to support trust and system leaders in making informed, strategic decisions about their digital portfolios. It is accompanied by a comprehensive report highlighting both the potential productivity gains and the barriers facing the sector.

The toolkit stresses that effective prioritisation is critical to managing competing demands, focusing resources, accelerating value delivery, and improving morale. Among its guiding principles are: responding to user needs, aligning digital projects with organisational and system-wide strategies, ensuring transparent governance, adopting iterative roadmaps and communicating priorities clearly.

It also includes practical exercises for prioritisation and roadmapping, along with links to further resources for implementation support.

The accompanying report explores how digital technologies can boost productivity across the NHS. It identifies areas where time savings and efficiency improvements can be achieved, such as through reduced admin burden and better allocation of clinician time toward patient care.

However, the report also issues a note of caution: digital transformation is not a “silver bullet.” While technologies such as electronic patient record (EPR) systems can be powerful enablers, they often come with high costs and require substantial cultural and operational change to deliver their full potential.

As the report puts it: “Technology alone does not deliver productivity gains. True impact comes from the transformation in culture and operating models that supports digital change.”
