NEWS: Patients Call for More Personalised GP Services

As reported by Southampton University, a new study reveals what patients want most from their GP

Patients across Britain are calling for more personalised and accessible GP services, highlighting that better communication and greater choice are just as important as speedy appointments, according to new research.

A major review conducted by the University of Southampton has revealed the top priorities patients have for their general practice care. Among the key demands are easier booking systems, the ability to choose their GP and more meaningful relationships with their practice teams.

The systematic review of 33 studies, published in the British Journal of General Practice, also found that many patients are dissatisfied with being routinely directed to nurses or clinical pharmacists when GPs are unavailable.

The findings come at a time when pressure on primary care is intensifying and satisfaction with services is at historic lows.

Lead author Professor Helen Atherton, Professor of Primary Care Research at the University of Southampton, said the NHS must shift focus from simply measuring satisfaction to genuinely understanding and delivering the care patients want. “Patients want a deeper connection with their doctor’s practice, better communication, and the choice to see the right professional in the best way for them,” she said. “The NHS needs to better understand what people want so it can shape its services to work for patients. Ignoring these fundamental needs will only exacerbate the issues it currently faces.”

The study’s findings echo results from the recent British Social Attitudes survey, which showed public satisfaction with general practice has dropped to an all-time low with just one in five patients reporting satisfaction with their GP services.
