As reported by Digital Health, the government has unveiled plans for sweeping NHS reforms as part of the NHS Modernisation Bill, legislation that will be debated in Parliament on 01st June and is set to reshape how health services are organised and delivered

Among the headline measures are proposals to abolish NHS England and introduce a mandatory Single Patient Record, designed to bring together health information currently held across different parts of the system.

Ministers say the new record will give healthcare professionals access to a more complete picture of a patient’s medical history, including medications, allergies and prescribing information, helping to improve safety and reduce duplication across services.

The government estimates that better access to shared records could save more than £20 million annually through reduced medicines waste and more effective prescribing.

The legislation also lays the groundwork for NHS Online, a new digital service due to launch in 2027. The platform will allow patients to access consultations from clinicians across England, offering an alternative route to care alongside existing NHS services.

According to the government, the combined reforms are expected to improve access to treatment, ease pressure on frontline services and prevent around 20,000 A&E attendances each year.
