NEWS: NHS England Halts New Gender Hormone Prescriptions

Doctor or physician writing diagnosis and giving a medical prescription to female Patient

As reported by the BBC, NHS England has decided not to begin new prescriptions of hormone treatments for young people questioning their gender identity while it reviews the available scientific evidence

The decision follows the commissioning of ten independent evidence reviews examining the use of testosterone and oestrogen, both as standalone treatments and when combined with other medicines, for young people who identify as a gender different from their biological sex.

According to the health service, the reviews did not provide sufficiently strong or consistent data to determine whether these treatments provide overall benefit or pose potential harm for this group.

As a result, NHS England said it will pause new prescriptions while it considers feedback from healthcare professionals and advocacy organisations. A public consultation has also been launched to help shape longer-term policy on the use of the treatments.

The health service said the number of teenagers affected by the decision is expected to be small.

Young people already receiving hormone therapy will continue their treatment. However, clinicians have been asked to review those cases to ensure the care being provided remains appropriate.

For those unable to access hormone treatment, alternative forms of support will be offered through the three specialist NHS gender services currently operating for children in England.

One transgender advocacy organisation has indicated it may pursue legal action in response to the decision.
