As reported by Digital Health, patients with rare cancers will be able to find and access clinical trials more easily under plans to integrate the Be Part of Research service into the NHS App

The change will allow patients to search the national clinical research database through the app and register interest in relevant trials, as part of a wider package of reforms set out in a new cancer plan launched today. Over time, patients will also be able to opt in to receive automatic notifications about trials that may be suitable for them.

The move supports the government’s ambition that three in four people diagnosed with cancer from 2035 onwards will be cancer free or living well five years after diagnosis. The proposals also align with the Rare Cancers Bill, which is currently progressing through Parliament.

Alongside changes to trial access, the plan includes a £2.3bn investment to deliver 9.5 million additional diagnostic tests by 2029, supported by new scanners, digital systems and automated testing.

The package also sets out plans to expand robot assisted surgery across the NHS, with the number of procedures expected to rise from 70,000 to 500,000 a year by 2035, aiming to reduce complications and increase hospital capacity.
