NEWS: AI Set to Drive NHS App Expansion Under New Health Framework

Digital healthcare and medical technology concept. Using AI artificial intelligence, telemedicine, mobile health applications, remote healthcare for personalized diagnoses and treatment in real time.

As reported by Digital Health, online consultation tools are set to become a core part of NHS access, with the NHS App positioned as the main channel for patient communication, including messaging and notifications from GP practices

The shift forms part of the government’s new ‘Neighbourhood health framework’, published on 17 March, which sets out a national model for delivering more coordinated, community-based care. The framework defines five core priorities, supported by both national targets and locally tailored goals, covering health outcomes, access to general practice, planned care, urgent and emergency services, and overall experience for patients and staff.

A stronger digital infrastructure is central to the plan. The framework emphasises that services should be designed around individuals rather than organisational structures, with technology playing a key role in enabling this shift.

As part of this, the NHS aims to improve efficiency in general practice by expanding the use of digital tools. This includes wider adoption of artificial intelligence, ambient voice technology, and AI-supported triage systems to streamline workflows and free up clinician time.

Better data sharing between services is also a major focus, with plans to connect hospitals, primary care and social care more effectively so care can be organised around patients’ needs.

The approach builds on plans announced by Keir Starmer in July 2026 to establish a Neighbourhood Health Service as part of the government’s wider 10-year NHS strategy.
