We’ve all heard the phrase, “You look like you’ve got the weight of the world on your shoulders.” Lately, that’s felt less like a saying and more like reality. Between grim headlines, rising living costs, and the endless stream of global crises, it’s no wonder so many of us feel mentally and emotionally flooded.

In a recent survey by YoungMinds, 82% of young people in the UK said they were worried about political events, while the Office for National Statistics found that three-quarters of adults were anxious about climate change. It’s a lot to carry – and for many, the constant sense of uncertainty can leave the body stuck in survival mode.

That’s where neuro-linguistic programming, or NLP, comes in. It’s not a magic fix for the world’s problems, but it is a practical way to calm your nervous system and reclaim a sense of steadiness when things feel overwhelming. Master NLP coach Chantal Dempsey explains five simple tools you can use to stay grounded, even when life feels like a storm.

  1. Ground through your senses

When anxiety spikes, the brain often slips into fight-or-flight mode, flooding your system with stress signals. “By deliberately tuning into your senses, you signal safety to your nervous system,” says Chantal. “It’s how you begin to down-regulate those heightened emotional states.”

Try placing a hand gently on your heart or stomach, noticing the warmth of your touch. Then name three things you can see, three things you can hear, and three things you can feel. This simple act brings your awareness back to the present moment – a powerful anchor amid chaos.

  1. Use language as an anchor

Words shape experience more than we realise. According to Chantal, the language you use becomes “an instruction manual for your brain and body.” By choosing words that soothe, you can shift your internal state.

Pick a phrase that feels calming and true for you – something like “Let yourself settle,” or “I am getting calmer and calmer.” Repeat it slowly, like a gentle mantra, allowing the rhythm to sink in. It’s a way to speak calm back into your system when the world feels noisy.

  1. Adjust your mental images

Our thoughts aren’t just words; they’re vivid mental pictures. NLP teaches that the way your brain encodes these images – their size, colour, distance, even brightness – can change how strongly you feel them.

“Imagine the worrying thought as an image,” says Chantal. “Now, visualise a control panel with dials and sliders. Can you dim the colours, move it farther away, or turn the volume down?” Tweaking how a thought appears in your mind can instantly reduce its emotional punch, giving you back a sense of control.

  1. Rehearse your calm self

Your brain responds to imagination almost as powerfully as it does to reality. “Research shows that visualising a positive outcome activates the same neural pathways as living it,” Chantal notes.

Close your eyes and picture the most grounded, capable version of yourself. See them handling the situation with ease. Notice their posture, tone, and calm confidence. Then, take one small action they would take. Over time, this practice trains your mind and body to return to that calm state more easily.

  1. Anchor your “wow” moments

Think back to a time when you felt unstoppable – proud, joyful, fully alive. Maybe it was finishing a challenge, laughing with friends, or standing somewhere breathtaking. Relive that feeling in as much sensory detail as possible.

“At the peak of that emotion, press two fingers together,” Chantal advises. “That gesture becomes your anchor – a quick route back to strength and confidence whenever you need it.” Repeat this whenever you want to reinforce it.

These techniques won’t erase the world’s troubles, but they will help you navigate them with steadier hands and a calmer heart. NLP is, in essence, a way of reminding yourself that while you can’t control the tide, you can learn how to find your footing in the waves.
